On this blog I usually post information about various opportunities for job seekers and entrepreneurs but I could not help sharing the following information about a BOOK that I have recently discovered: "How to Live and Thrive in the U.S." by Donna Poisl. It is a bilingual book targeted to Hispanic immigrants but it will be helpful to everyone else too.
While my book, "The Legal Alien's Guide", help you to find a job, start own business or just find friends, "How to Live and Thrive in the U.S." answers important day-to-day questions of newcomers to USA, such as:
Where do I get my driver license?
What hours are they open?
What do I need to register my children for school?
How do I find a new doctor? and many others.
The book has 2 sites:
In English: http://www.howtoliveandthrive.com/
In Spanish: http://www.howtoliveandthrive.com/

Palatine Business Professional Women
It is often believed that all major networking events happen downtown Chicago, which is not true. For, instance, in my book, "The Legal Alien's Guide", I list more than 30 networking groups which help those in career transition and which get together locally in each Chicago suburb.
The same is true for networking groups for small business owners. The only problem is that it is much easier to find information about a big Chicago based organization than about a small local one. Here is an example of a Palatine group for professional women: Palatine BPW http://www.palatinebpw.org/
The goal of this organization is "To achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education, and information" As it is mentioned on their website, Palatine BPW provides the following opportunities for women:
- The opportunity to stay current on the professional and community issues affecting working women today.
- Development of professional and leadership skills by participating in organization activities and the Individual Development Course offered by locals.
- Networking with other working women in the area, throughout the state and across the country as well as networking with other working women in the community.
Some of the activities that Palatine BPW hold on a regular basis:
- Monthly meeting with guest speaker
- Fundraisers for scholarships
- Career seminars
- Educational seminars for young girls
- Young Careerist competition Outstanding
- Working Woman competition or recognition
- Social outings (plays, ball games, special exhibits and events)
Therefore, this is an example of a "well-rounded" group that offers something for small business owners, those who a looking for a job and those who just want to meet likeminded people at a social event.

Painless networking
Just recently I found out about another interesting networking group in Chicagoland called PAINLESS NETWORKING. It includes over 400 people connected to sports and event marketing in Chicago. The members come from teams, brands, agencies, media and vendors.
Painless Networking Sessions are held approximately every 6 weeks and are a casual get together - no agendas, no fees no speakers. Just a way to meet solid people in and around the industry and network.
As a service to the PN group, a digest of job postings is sent out as they collect. Please, send any postings, list adds/changes, feedback and requests to join the group to Chris Hartweg mailto:hchartweg@huddlepro.com.
(This group doesn't have a website and all communication among the members is done via the e-mail above).

For moms/women anywhere in USA
Here is a great on-line networking community which is called CafeMom: http://www.cafemom.com/
You can join it for free and enjoy the interaction wherever you are in USA. The membership is FREE and there are 2 useful sides to this network: it provides social interaction opportunities (mostly for moms, obviously) and information on employment opportunities. In terms of the latter not only moms but any women can benefit from the information provided if she wants to work part-time or work from home.
When you sign-up you can join multiple groups on this site: if you are interested only in employment you can join a group called "Staying at home and making money", for instance. And this is just an example because there are loads of other groups within this network discussing job opportunities. Alternatively, you can join any of the social groups in such categories as: home and garden, schools and education, cultures and ethnicity, and many other. You can also find groups by geographic location.
I am sure every mom and most of women will find at least 1 group of interest on this site. If you are new to this country this is a good start to build new friendships!

Dialogue on Diversity
Dialogue on Diversity http://www.dialogueondiversity.org/ is a nonprofit educational organization, an official NGO recognized by the United Nations. It is based in Washington D.C. and it organizes nationwide conferences, seminars, internships, and annual leadership award recognition as part of its larger program of entrepreneurship training and international exchange. It's mission is: "The social and political advancement of women and men from diverse cultural, ethnic, and national traditions, fostering increased economic empowerment through promotion and development of entrepreneurial excellence, technology training, networking, and education."
I already posted information about an event put together by Dialogue:
http://legalaliensguide.blogspot.com/2007/06/dialogue-on-diversity-symposium.html But now I wanted to draw your attention to organization itself. The programs it offers are great for both entrepreneurs and those working for someone else. The issues they address directly concern legal aliens here in the U.S. because all of them constitute the diverse strata of American population.
Also it is important to point out that a lot of their events are free of charge (like the aforesaid 1 day Diversity Symposium that took place in Chicago in July). They also provide you with free newsletters. It is worthwhile monitoring their website for up-coming programs and events in your area and may be even become a member.

Employment in European companies doing business in USA
Recently I came across a retained executive search firm, DSML Executive Search http://dsmlexecutivesearch.com/index.htm, that specifically focuses on recruiting Senior Level Executive talent for the US subsidiaries of European companies. They specialize in General Management, Sales and Marketing Management positions.
If you are a Legal Alien with European background living in USA you may have a unique skill set that European companies are looking for: on the one hand you know European business models, European markets and European languages; on the other hand since you are located in USA you know the local market and is uniquely positioned where a company would want you to be (they won't need to pay a relocation package). Therefore it is worthwhile to check out DSML's website where they describe what they are, what they do and how they do it.
This company is located in Chicago but they cover all North American operations of European companies.

Goethe-Institut
Goethe-Institut is "the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach". Their mission is to "promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation."
This is a great place to learn more about Germany from all angles: cultural, political, etc. They have a lot of informational resources including the library if you are interested in German literature. The Institute provides great German classes if you want to learn the language and it also constantly hires German teachers if you are interested in this kind of job.
They also organize a lot of cultural events: music events, films, art events, etc.
So based on the types of activities and events organized, Goethe-Institute can be a great place to go to for social networking for both Germans and non-Germans. I friend of mine who is not German but speaks German as a 2nd language and visits the Institute often says it's the best place for anyone interested in anything "German".
The website of the Institute in Chicago is http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/chi/enindex.htm but the good news is that it operates in other major US cities as well. To find the website of the Institute in your city, please, go to http://www.goethe.de/ins/us/chi/enindex.htm

International Trade Association of Greater Chicago
ITA/GC is a big organization that can offer a lot to those who are interested in growing business internationally, international cooperation and international interaction. As it mentioned on their website http://www.itagc.org their "focus is on practicality: on building knowledge and enabling relationships that help people do international business. While our scope of interest is complex—all aspects of trading across all geographies and all industries—our work is simple: to help others gain understanding that is personal, current, and useful."
ITA/GC organizes several events per month: some of them are more education-oriented, others are more networking-oriented. But even those that are more educational give you chance for networking during the registration as well as after the event.
You can benefit from what ITA/GC if you are an entrepreneur or business professional interested in gaining international contacts or if you are an international yourself and want to meet your countryman or your American counterparts.
Membership in this organization is for a fee as well as all events. However, you don't need to be a member to attend events, you just pay a little bit more to attend an event and the fees are very reasonable.
ITA/GC also offers a lot of useful resources: newsletter, white papers, trade literature, etc.

College Recruiter
It is difficult to be an alien not knowing what to do and where to turn to especially if you are at a turning point in your life: graduating from high school or college. College Recruiter http://www.collegerecruiter.com/ is the best website I saw so far for young people, fresh graduates looking for that important first position as well as high school graduates looking for information about higher education.
Information the site offers for high school seniors:
1. Colleges and universities
2. Student loans
3. Advice on exciting new majors that a student can choose, such as biomedical photography or biomedical engineering
Information for college graduates:
1. Lists of available jobs on the site
2. Information on employers and from employers as well as information on recruiters and from recruiters
3. Useful links on such topics as: salary reports, resume writing and distribution, personality assessment, industry magazines and many others
And these are just the examples of numerous other useful resources that are on this site.
Finally, there is a section of the site that will be useful for everyone: the site supports various blogs. The authors of the blogs are various experts: admission counselors, career counselors, resume experts, internship experts, networking experts (yours truly was honored to be included as an author of the career-related blog).
The site is also very user-friendly and it is constantly up-dated with new information.

Networking group for women in Chicago western suburbs
West Suburban Women Entrepreneurs (WSWE) http://www.wswe.org/ is an organization that provides a forum for women business owners in Chicago's western suburbs.
WSWE organizes monthly meetings and special programs which are good networking opportunities for members and which have some educational content as well. The purpose of this organization is also to provide support and referrals for women entrepreneurs. Another advantage for business owners is that WSWE publishes information about all its members on its site which is good advertising.
Membership is for a fee which is a little bit higher than an average fee in a women network in Chicagoland but if you are based in Western Suburbs and are looking for a support group this is the one for you.
